The fibre rich side stream from Speximo´s EQMULSETM production can be used for healthier food products. In a student project performed at Lund University, food products with increased fibre and reduced fat content were developed. The fibre rich quinoa material provided a good sensory acceptance. This valorization of Speximo side streams was a conceptual project in line with the sustainability focus. No waste and improved nutritional profile!
The students behind the project: Rojas Benites Daniella, Papailia Faidra, Lie-Piang Anouk, and Gandasasmita Madeleine Audrey, current students at The European Master in Food Studies.

POS Bio-Sciences announced a formal cooperation agreement with Speximo in press release cited below.
SASKATOON – POS Bio-Sciences announced a formal cooperation agreement with Sweden’s Speximo today.
Headquartered in Lund, Sweden, Speximo offers green, innovative and sustainable solutions for the encapsulation and stabilization of oil-water emulsions by using selected starches. Saskatoon-based POS Bio-Sciences is a leading edge ingredient development company and has developed processes for production of various unique oils and oil fractions for the food, nutraceutical and cosmetic industries. So, the partnership is a natural and complimentary match.
“This partnership will be of great interest to companies producing specialty oils as well as those looking for new applications for small granule starches,” says Dr. Rick Green, VP of Technology for the POS Group of Companies.
In many grains, starch is a high volume, low value by-product from protein processing. Combining their technologies, POS and Speximo will be working to find higher value uses for starches and thereby generate higher revenue from the secondary product.
“Speximo provides a unique technology using starch particles to create effective oil emulsions and encapsulated powdered oils,” says Dr. Malin Sjöö, Speximo CEO. “With Speximo’s emulsion encapsulation technology the oil and oil-based actives are protected inside the capsule – POS has the expertise and equipment to further develop and process microencapsulated oils.”
Encapsulating oils is a technology in high demand by a variety of industries and allows oil to be stabilized or protected against oxidation. Encapsulated oils are used in a wide array of applications, such as beverages, foods, cosmetics and personal care products.
“We see lots of potential for synergism between our two companies,” continues Green. “Both POS and Speximo have an interest developing new functional ingredients, and we will be focused on leveraging each other’s strengths.”
POS Bio-Sciences is an innovative R & D bioprocessing company that customizes inventive answers for clients across the global market place. POS creates value added products and ingredients from biological materials of all kinds, for uses in food supplements, nutraceuticals, cosmetics, biofuels, and medical devices. POS supports those who desire sustainable and profitable products and processes. This competitive position is based on employee-ownership and with employees having a vested interest in providing the very best in value and customer service. POS’s head office is located in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada.
Speximo attended Starch World Europe in Vienna, October 24-25 gathering the starch industry and related industries. Speximo CEO Malin Sjöö held a highly rated presentation on "Sustainable Stabilization and Encapsulation Technology from Small Granular Starches".
The event was supported by the European Starch Industry Association. Well known companies and institutes were found among the speakers and exhibitors. Topics included starch innovations, developments in starch based feedstocks, clean labelling, gluten free developments, and value added products derived from starch processing.
Don´t miss The Bridge Summit in Lund, Sweden, June 22-23 2016 - Pushing humanity forward by linking science and business! The Bridge is initiated by Invest in Skåne and Medicon Village in close collaboration with the two state-of-the-art research facilities MAXIV and ESS, and with the support of dedicated regional and international companies and organisations. On May 22-25 Speximo present our encapsulation technology at TechConnect World Innovation Conference and Expo in Washington DC. Novel encapsulation technology based on Pickering emulsion systems are presented in the Materials for Personal/Home Care and Cosmetics section. Samples are displayed at both 300 hosted by Business Sweden.
From the conference publication:
"A novel technology based on using particles of biological origin was recently developed for stabilising emulsions. This technology, that utilises Pickering emulsions, was further employed to encapsulate different types of active substances. Advance development and refinement of the technology has been performed in order to suit different encapsulation purposes in areas within personal care, food and pharmaceuticals. Some areas where this technology has been tested include taste masking in food systems, encapsulation and protection of a cosmetic active, production of oil filled powder encapsulates, and on-skin performance."
